Exhibition charting experiences of children in war on show at Pie Factory Margate
March 8, 2025 Kathy Bailes
Repeating Chasms Railway contains a poem and images by Thanet-based artist Barbarita Marks
Barbarita trained at Bradford School of Art and then studied Textile Design at the Central School of Art in Holborn.
In the nineties she took part in an art symposium in the Czech Republic and Dunkirk before studying Fine Art at Middlesex University and attending the print department in Kingsway College, London where she discovered a deep love of etching.
The latest exhibition features four images:
Image one is The ‘Return Journey’ – an experiential poem using images as a backdrop and inviting the viewer to explore the spiral.
Image two expresses joy by playing with scale and working on both sides of paper.
Image three is a series of ten poems also using images as a backdrop.
Image 4 is a view of the installation Repeating Chasms Railway where the juxtaposition of gathered data gives an archival experience of how we have arrived at current wars.
Barbarita says: “The exhibition as a whole focuses on being an advocate for children and their experience of war.
“Alongside the exhibition is a soundscape compiled with Alex Caldon. The “unanswered question” or the “People’s Audio” asks why are we killing our children? I am gathering translations of the word “why’ to give voice to those who are unheard.
“This is an ongoing project and will continue when the exhibition closes.”
Repeating Chasms Railway is on show at the Pie Factory in Margate Old Town until March 17, 11am to 5pm daily.
